Bio

This is the fifteenth anniversary of the first issue of the Connecticut punk fanzine Fun With Cows. FWC had a six year run, producing a scant seven issues. The first three issues were a traditional music 'zine, which included interviews with Henry Rollins, Big Mistake, Naked Raygun, Big Gulp, Affirmative Action, Piece By Piece (who were better known as Freedom of Choice), Fugazi, Blatz, and Tonka. I also interviewed Nation of Ulysses and Born Against, but was too lazy to transcribe them. Guest columns were written by such CTPR luminaries as Steve Dore, Jeff Artiaco, Ernst (from Jack Acid), and Charles Krich. Issues four through seven were a little more impressionistic, and perhaps a little "conceptual." It was the standard arc of development for the late 80s/early 90s generation of punk rockers, and I was certainly not exempt.

Fun With Cows was also a show promotion entity, putting on not for profit shows featuring Nation of Ulysses, Born Against, Citizen Fish, Cringer, Bikini Kill, Moss Icon, and many local groups.

It has been a long time. Why am I starting a blog called Fun_With_Cows when a simple pass through any issue fills me with discomfort, when I no longer live in CT, and when the quality of current punk rock culture and music is so dismally poor? The first reason is because my other blog, [info]usual_channels has a format that makes extended writing difficult, and I wanted a place to solely write about music. The second reason is harder to explain, but I'll try.

Fun With Cows was my first attempt at expressing not only "myself" (what a terrible and false expresion "expressing myself" is...), but at expressing my love of music. And at developing my understanding of music, my take on it, my role in it. Lots of who I was when I wrote it is present in who I am today. Here I will write about all kinds of music; not just punk. But punk rock is who I am. It's where I came from, and it's a living part of me.

The modest number of friends who'll read this blog is probably greater than the number of people who read Fun With Cows in print. The point is not in assigning historical significance to your efforts, but rather in honoring your own history, the reality of continuity, and in fighting the good fight that never expires. If you spend your life displeased with the last thing you did, or the last thing you were, your final hour will be a son of a bitch.
